About the author : Michael Crichton is known as the Father Of Techno-Thriller genre. Michael Crichton also was an American author, producer, director, and screenwriter, best know for his novel Jurassic Park, Lost World and ER television series. His literary works are usually based on the action genre and heavily feature technology and techno-thriller genre.

About the book : State of Fear is published in 2004, is a techno-thriller novel by Michael Crichton concerning eco-villans who attempt mass murder to support their views. The book contains many graphs and footnotes, and a twenty page bibliography, which have given many people the impression that the book has scientific authority, but a majority of climate scientists dispute Crichton’s science as being error-filled and distorted.

Review :Does Global Warming real exist?

The main theme of the book revolves around the Global Warming and it’s surrounding allegories. Michael Crichton this novels actual topic is ‘State Of Fear’ the people are in due to the media circus and media’s acceptance of pseudo-science. Consider for example recent news about ‘Swine Flu’, Cancer from Cell Phone radiation and off course Global Warming and Cooling. We never re think about the claims and instantly believe the media hype.  Michael Crichton points out here that the Laboratories doing the research have financial and political biases to arrive at predetermined conclusions.

Michael Crinchton did it again, like he did in ‘Jurasic Park’, ‘The Lost World’ and ‘ER’ but this time the field is environmental protection and global warming. He has done very huge amount of research to support the facts in this book. You will find many Graphs and footnotes and many references from where he got the Graphs and Notes. While reading the book, you will feel that you are reading some science journal with the story in it.

The story goes something like this, there were some bunch of ‘global warming’ enthusiasts who want to create a range of huge ‘natural disasters’ that will support their theories. There is a secret agent who want to stop the ‘natural disasters’ and try to understand what is this all about. The point here is not the story, the point is tell the readers what actually the global warming is and how government trying to keep citizens in the ‘State of Fear’.

Overall a good read not like other Crichton’s books, I recommend this book for techno-thriller fans.

Review : Great Thriller!, This book will grab you by throat and never let you go till the end like Tiger grabs it’s prey by throat. Excellent character development, excellent plot, nail biting suspense, unpredictable plot.

This novel shows some real distrubing and shocking pictures of early 50’s Stalin era of Soviet Union. I really don’t read much of Serial Killer novels but I heard lot of buzz about this novel and many of my friends recommend it to me so picked this book.
After the Mind Blowing and Chilling Prologue which takes place in 1930s Ukraine, The novel starts in 1953 Moscow where we meet the Leo Demidov who is Stalinist secret policeman. His sole job is to interrogate and torture free thinker who think of acting out of sync with Stalinist rules.

In a era where Party believes ” There Is No Crime” in Communist Russia ruled by Stalin, a horrific murder of young boy takes place. Leo refuses to believe that this is a murder because he told so by higher authorities of the party and they made Leo also believe that there can be no murder in Communist Russia. Leo is a Great Patriotic War hero and perfect soldier of the regime.

Tom Rob Smith here used the murder mystery to explore the Grey areas of the Soviet Union, he also explore the life and culture in Soviet Union before and after the Stalinist period. He explained very intelligently how people feared to tell the truth, how people stopped thinking against party. How love itself built around fear, fear of betrayal, fear of execution and fear of arrest. Once person is arrested then there is no escape. If you are suspect, then you were guilty, since the state did not make any mistakes. If Party say there is no murder then there is no murder, if you say it as a murder then you will be considered as the enemy of the state and eventually executed.

This gives the Killer a free pass to kill anyone he wanted and know one believes that there is a killer who is killing at will because of the rules of party. Leo believes that the same killer has murdered many other children across the state but he didn’t tell anybody because there were no unsolved and unresolved murders in the state. The story is based on real life Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo (aka “The Rostov Ripper”). There are many non-friction books written about the killer  such as The Killer Department by Robert Cullen, Hunting The Devil by Richard Lourie, The Red Ripper by Peter Conradi.

The real challenge to Leo Demidov is to find the unnamed serial killer in the state where government denies the existence of crime. He start his own investigation and discovers dead and tortured children bodies throughout Russia, and despite the growing threat to his own safety (because he is challenging the state and taking law in his own hands) Leo is determined to stop the child murderer. He cannot official conduct any investigations because state believes there is no crime to investigate. He cannot interrogate the eye witnesses because as per party there is no crime to witness. He must put his life, his wife’s life and his parents life in danger in order to investigate the murders.

A real page turner and nail biting suspense and real historical thriller which will definitely thrill you. I highly recommend this book to all my readers.

The Number Four must find the others and join them in order to fight with Mogadarians, because they are the last of there kind and only hope of the planet Lurien. These nine children have different legacies (Super powers), which won’t develop until they reach certain age, but they don’t know what the powers will be. The explosive action sequence at the end of the book are just amazing, it will keep you at the edge of your seat.

It was impossible to stop reading once you started it, though certain ideas are far fetched. I am looking forward for movie and the next book “The Power Of Six” which will be releasing in 2011.

Being a fan of Matrix trilogy, I always wondered about the Room No 101 in which Neo stays and the Number 101 also appears in The Matrix Reloaded when Morpheus, Neo, and Trinity first go meet the Merovingian.

So what is the significance of the Room No 101 in Matrix, why it so important?
I Googled “Room no 101 matrix” I found no of references to the “George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four”. So I bought this book a month back and start reading it last week.

This book (1984) is George Orwell’s classic science fiction novel which tells us about the future world, this book is written in 1948. The things which we have today for example, CCTV cameras every where we go, Mobile phones being taped, Hidden Micro Phones all these things which are remotely impossible in the year 1948 is described very well in this book.

You might have heard about the “Big Brother” , you might have wondered from where the word “Big Brother” and the concept of “Big Brother” came from, the word and the idea of the show came from this vivid and incredible book.

Nineteen Eighty-Four sets in Oceania, the book takes place in “Airstrip One”, the Oceania province which once called “England or Britain”. Through out the city there are posters of Big Brother bearing the caption BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. There were Telescreen (transceiving television) ubiquitously monitors the private and public lives of the population. The telescreen where installed in every home and every street, there is no place you can find without a telescreen. Every move and every word uttered is monitored and recorded by the Party.

The population of the Oceania is divided in to three groups namely :
1. Inner Party also known as Upper Class.
2. Outer Party also known as Middle Class.
3. Proles also know as Lower Class (who make up 85% of the population and represent the working classes).

The government ministries are divided into four parts, namely :
1. Ministry of Peace.
2. Ministry of Plenty.
3. Ministry of Love.
4. Ministry of Truth.

The story of Wintson Smith who is an literate thinker and a member of Outer party begins in the year 1984. He works as an editor responsible for the historical revisionism of the  Wintson Smith works involves correcting the prophecies of Big Brother, if say BB had said that tomorrow xyz companies shares will be profitable and if it won’t happens then he need to collect all the news papers of previous day and correct the prophecies and redistribute them and the old news papers will be sent to memory hole (a garbage collector).

The biggest crime in Oceania is Thoughtcrime, The Thought Police are the secret police whose sole job is to detect the Thoughtcrime and eliminate the members who is involved in the Thoughtcrime. If you think that BB is wrong and whatever he is doing is bullshit then you have committed a Thoughtcrime and punishment for it is death.

Wintson Smith is in grave danger because his memory still function and he maintains a secret diary which tells the actual event occurred in the past whose record are destroyed by the Party. He also joins a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood. Emmanuel Goldstein started the organization “The Brotherhood”, he is once top member of the ruling “Party”. The main aim of the “The Brotherhood” is the destruction of Party.

One day Thought Police arrests him for Thoughtcrime, for maintaining the Diary and joining the “The Brotherhood”. He is brought to Room 101 which is a torture chamber in the Ministry of Love in which a prisoner is subjected to his or her own worst nightmare, fear or phobia.

What happens in Room 101 changes the whole life and every thought of Wintson Smith. Even he believes that 2 + 2 = 5.
The main motive shown in this book is “If you control the thought of the person, then you can control him, according to the Party every thing exists in human thought, the universe, the stars and the Past.”

If you control the present the you can control the past because past exists only in written document.

I highly recommend this book for all the Sci-Fi fans and also for those who love classics.
